Hiller takes loss, Streit listed as ‘day to day’
Jonas Hiller continues to start in the Anaheim Ducks goal, though unlike his last trip to Minnesota, Wednesday night’s game is one he’ll probably rather forget. On the East coast, Mark Streit was reevaluated and his injury not deemed serious enough to warrant anything beyond a “day to day” update.
Hiller faced 25 shots at Minnesota last night, saving 22, as the Ducks were soundly defeated by the Wild by 3-0. Ironically, the last time Anaheim played Minnesota the score was identical, though Hiller got the victory and the shutout, his fourth of the season. Ducks coach Randy Carlyle meanwhile reiterated that Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the team’s starter the first half of the season, is given time to grieve the loss of his father, who died in December. “The guy is going through a huge loss in his life,” Carlyle said of Giguere in an interview with Canwest News Service. “We’re trying to create an environment around him that allows him some time.
Streit is listed as day to day after leaving Tuesday night’s game with an “upper body injury.” This is certainly good news for Streit and the Islanders, as it means the defenseman is unlikely to miss significant (or possibly any) time away from the ice. Of course players listed as “day to day” can and often do miss significant time; the Islanders have two “day to day” players (Sean Bergenheim and Freddy Meyer) who have missed a combined 16 games The injury kept Streit out of yesterday’s practice, according to Newsday. NHL teams do not have to go further than “upper body” or “lower body” when disclosing injuries to players. One would think that for somebody who skates for a living, an “upper body” injury is less serious, though this could of course still include concussions and broken bones. Bottom line: it’s too early to tell just how significant Streit’s injury is, though initial signs are good that it is at least not very serious.
